Financial Scheme for Maori Students
The Ministry's Mapihi Pounamu Financial Assistance scheme helps ensure Maori students take part and achieve in education. We have established the scheme to target students who face specific
barriers to learning. You may have students who are eligible to seek support under the scheme's two categories:
Category A - Students at Ongoing Risk
This category is for students with difficult home circumstances where there is ongoing risk to their wellbeing or lack of adequate supportive care. Parents or caregivers can make applications to us for
students in this category. Each application needs to include a letter detailing the student's ongoing risk. This letter can be written by you or agencies
such as Child Youth and Family Service, NZ Police Youth Aid division, Specialist Education Services, or Maori social services.

Category B - Students Living in Isolated Areas
This is for students who are from low-income families living in isolated areas.
We will assess all applications made under this category to ensure they meet the distance criteria.
You can find more information on the Mapihi
Pounamu scheme, including downloadable guidelines and the application form at
http://www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/mapihipounamu.
