The Maori Qualifications Service (MQS) is a separate service unit within the Authority. MQS sits under a Group Manager alongside National Qualifications Services, Pacific People's Qualifications and Qualifications Evaluation Services.
The role of MQS is to generate new qualifications review standards in Field Maori
promote the uptake of Maori qualifications
provide assessment resources and training for tutors and teachers.
What is meant by Field Maori?
New Zealand is the first country in the world to establish an entire education field that formally recognises traditional indigenous knowledge.
The four cornerstones of Field Maori are
Reo Maori (Maori language)
Whakairo (carving)
Raranga (weaving)
Tikanga (Maori customs and practices).
These four subfields (along with 11 others) make up the body of qualifications and unit standards that make up Field Maori.
The existence of Field Maori has major implications for the range and types of programmes that can be offered by training providers.
