Education Review Office
Author : Ministry of Education.

Created : 09 Jun 2002
Last Revision : 09 Jun 2002
The Education Review Office (ERO) is a government department whose sole purpose is to report publicly on the education and care of students in schools and early childhood centres.

What ERO does . . .
ERO carries out different types of reviews - accountability reviews, cluster reviews of education institutions and services, and national evaluations of education issues. It also provides contract evaluation services.

Education reviews.
In an Education Review ERO investigates and reports to boards of trustees, early childhood centre managers and the Government on the quality of education provided for students in individual centres and schools.

Reviews of schools and centres are scheduled on the basis of prior performance, current risk appraisal and general review frequency. Schools are reviewed every three to four years, and early childhood centres every four to five years. Reviews are more frequent in particular cases such as low quality performance or major risks to the students and their safety. ERO reports on individual schools and centres are freely available to the public. They can be obtained from the individual school or centre or from any ERO office.

Homeschool reviews.
ERO reports to the Secretary for Education on the education of students exempted from attending a school. The law requires that students educated at home be taught as regularly and well as in a registered school.

Cluster reviews.
From time to time ERO undertakes reviews of education which look at groups or areas with common features. These have included reports on the performance of schools in a defined geographical area, and at particular populations of students, such as boys.

Contract evaluation services.
ERO undertakes specific contracts with Crown agencies, such as the Ministry of Education

Evaluation reports.
ERO publishes national reports which evaluate specific education issues using its inspection evidence.

A list of these reports is available at Education Office Reports.
