NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION FOR GIFTED CHILDREN

Ever since its formation in 1975, the New Zealand Association for Gifted Children (NZAGC) has catered to the special needs of the gifted and talented. It helps parents understand these children, makes the educational authorities aware of their special needs, and helps these young people fulfill the potential of their giftedness.

Mission Statement : NZAGC will champion the cause of gifted children at home, in their schooling, and beyond.

Vision Statement : NZAGC will foster the educational and social development of gifted children through the achievement of a climate in which giftedness is recognised, understood and accepted as a valued human a ttribute and in which the special needs of gifted children are met fully, effectively and with generosity.

The NZAGC has three main aims :
  • to educate and support parents of the gifted
  • to support teachers in the area of educating gifted children
  • to bring gifted children together to find companionship and support through a variety of challenging activities

    To fulfill these aims, the association is made up of a national council which supports regional branches. The council organises national camps and activities, as well as producing two magazines ("Tall Poppies", a family magazine, and "Apex", a professionals journal). There is a national library and our council also lobbies politicians, pushing for the urgently needed resources in gifted education.

    Our regional branches support gifted children and their families by organising camps, courses and holiday visits. They publish their own newsletters, and help schools with the special needs of their gifted students.

    The National Council is made up of representatives from the educational sector, as well as branch and parent representatives.
