ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS
SUICIDE: THE AFTERMATH
This workshop addresses the nature of suicide grief and explores the challenges of living as a suicide survivor. It also addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual, social and intellectual aspects of healing from the pain of suicide. It is focused on supporting individuals, families and communities after a suicide or suicide attempt. Participants will learn:
- the grieving challenges of suicide grief
- factors complicating healing, how best to recognise these and support people in them
- common thought errors associated with suicide grief
- myths and commonly held beliefs about suicide that complicate the grief process
- common behavioural methods of coping with suicide
- common questions of survivors
- words that hurt – words that heal
- how to rewrite suicidal memories with ritual and memorial
- how best to support survivors
LIVING WITH VICARIOUS TRAUMA:
The Impact of Working or Living with Others Experiencing Trauma
This workshop addresses the realities of living with secondary trauma, as someone supporting others who are traumatised.. What are its cumulative effects? Who is at risk? What are the typical coping strategies? Participants will learn:
- warning signs of vicarious trauma
-striking a balance when working/living with traumatised people
- understanding how to process the experience of witnessing the atrocities of trauma
- recognising the cumulative effects of vicarious trauma - personally and professionally
- the relationship between power and vicarious trauma
- an understanding of individual, family and organisational effects of vicarious trauma
TALKING TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT ILLNESS AND DEATH
A community seminar that addresses the sensitive nature of having difficult conversations about, or with children and teens, regarding illness and death. This seminar looks at the who, what, where, when and why of having painful conversations concerning children. Participants will learn:
- how to deliver information with compassion and directness
- common fears preventing conversations
-compassionate techniques for ‘joining’ with people in times of pain
- basic ways children ‘hear’ and helpful ways to communicate with children
- using creative means as a powerful tool for delivering and soliciting information
- practical ways to separate yourself emotionally while communicating painful ideas
about TREY MALICOAT
Trey holds a Masters Degree in Psychology and operates a private practice that specialises in working with people impacted by life change. He is the director of Mother Oak Centre for Grieving Children, which is attached to an Oregon hospice. He has conducted trainings throughout the United States and has co-authored “The Challenge of Change: how to walk alongside a child or adolescent living with death, divorce, or life transition”. Trey is a member of the national US crisis response team for the National Organisation for Victim Assistance. He is on the faculty of Western Oregon University where he teaches classes on Human and Organisational Change, Violence, Trauma and Grief in Children & Adolescence, and on Bullying. He has extensive experience supporting children, young people and their families through loss and grief – including the trauma of the Oklahoma bombing, the Columbine High School tragedy and most recently, the Sept 11th terrorist attacks in New York.
