Workbase National Conference

Created : 13 Aug 2002

"Return on Investment of Training"

While there is considerable agreement about the need for a highly skilled workforce there has been relatively little work done in New Zealand to date about how to measure and evaluate the returns on investment in training particularly learning that focuses on literacy and numeracy.

This conference will:

contribute to the thinking about the tangible and intangible benefits of workforce literacy learning
raise awareness of the importance of evaluating the returns on training investment
provide tools and methods to measure and evaluate training returns.

Sessions will set the context for New Zealand and establish a framework for the different ways to think about return on investment looking at the perspectives of Government and the economy, industry sectors and individual enterprises. There will also be a focus on ways to measure returns on investment.

The conference will be held over the whole day followed by a cocktail function in the early evening and ample opportunities for networking.

Professor Rod McDonald as keynote speaker will cover a range of areas including:

-ways to measure return on investment with incomplete data
--how to isolate returns from training interventions
-how to sell the benefits of training
-how to maximise the benefits of training.

Professor McDonald is Special Advisor to the Australian National Training Authority and has carried out specific research into this area for the Australian National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). He was the lead presenter at a number of seminars NCVER held in key Australian cities earlier this year.
