Proposed Educational Lecture of New Zealand �Dyslexia & Mathematics�
Anne Henderson, University College, Wales.
Approximately 90% of dyslexic students struggle with mathematics. These students are often neglected because this aspect of the specific learning difficulty has not been universally addressed with the same intensity as their language problems. However, it is often in the number area of mathematics together with the difficulties of organization that often prevent dyslexics from using their mathematical potential to the full
Anne was asked to help dyslexic students with mathematics in the early eighties by the Dyslexia Unit at University College Wales, Bangor, and also by the local college, where Anne eventually became the Mathematics Co-ordinater working with teams in this special area of mathematics. In addition to writing three books, Anne has run both diploma and masters courses at several universities and INSET in many schools worldwide. In the UK now and indeed in many other countries, teachers are desperate for information as to how they can help these students.
To have the opportunity of working and helping teachers who are hungry for knowledge would give Anne the greatest satisfaction, as they in turn would be in a position to help thousands of dyslexic students who are struggling daily with mathematics. Developing confidence and self-esteem in students has always given Anne immense pleasure, so to enable teachers in New Zealand to do the same is a wonderful and tremendous opportunity.
Initially Anne was a mathematics teacher, but Dyslexia and Special Ed. Needs have been Anne�s prime interest for the last 30 years. Anne has taught students of all ages including infants to adults. Anne was a mathematics co-ordinator for some 13 years in a secondary school with students with an age range 11 to 18 years.

Anne Henderson has presented papers at conferences with Prof. Tim Miles, Prof. Mahesh Sharma, Tom West, Steve Chinn, Dr. Gavin Reid, Margaret Rawson and many others well known in the field of Dyslexia.
Tom West will be lecturing through New Zealand through mid August/September 2003. This will be one of the best yet.
