PRESS RELEASE
1 November 2002

Author launches his own campaign.

Tim Tipene, author of Taming the Taniwha and founder of the Warrior Kids programme, has launched the Families for Non-Violence campaign. The campaign, which includes a march in the beginning of the new-year and a Peaceful Living Day next october, also features a Families for Non-Violence pack. The pack equips individuals, groups and schools with manuals to provide their own addressing violence programmes, such as Peaceful Living meetings and the nationally recognised Warrior Kids programme. Families for Non-Violence posters and brochures on Peaceful Parenting and Facing Violence are also included.

Tim, who has dedicated his life to selfless service, is solely responsible not only for initiating the campaign, but also for writing and developing the pack, which can be obtained at a low cost of $85. His aim is to be a role model in making a stand for non-violence. "The issue of violence is not going away. The more opportunities that we have to promote non-violence, the louder and stronger our voice becomes, and if that means that at best we only stop the violence in our own lives, then better for it," says Tim. "The campaign also proves, that even as an individual, we can do so much. The area of serving others has been claimed by so called experts and agencies, that are more like community corporations. However we all have the ability to assist those around us and make a difference."
Tim has received no funding or assistance for organising the campaign and putting the packs together. In fact he steers clear of funding. "Once a service is reliant on funding, the focus changes. If anything, funding seems to perpetuate social issues rather than address them. To really have non-violent communities, our society as a whole needs to change."
Renouncing possessions, profit and desires, Tim has been actively involved in the community for over 10 years in such roles as counsellor, facilitator for living without violence groups, health and well-being programmes for people of all ages and as a trainer.

Check out Families for NonViolence. for more information and resources for programmes.
