Students demonstrate new online learning adventure 'The Hillary Challenge'
21 August 2003
What's new at UNITEC
Tuakau Primary School students were excited to be the first in New Zealand to relive their Hillary Challenge online adventures with Sir Edmund Hillary at a commemorative event hosted by the school in his honour.
Students demonstrated to Sir Edmund, who attended Tuakau Primary School from 1924 to 1931, and Education Minister Hon. Trevor Mallard, the skills and values they had learnt from The Hillary Challenge, a new online social studies programme that challenges pupils in years 5 - 10 to follow in Sir Edmund's footsteps.
Delivered in partnership with the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust, Ministry of Education, Microsoft New Zealand and UNITEC as part of the 50th anniversary of Sir Edmund's ascent of Mt Everest earlier this year, the programme retraces Sir Edmund's quest to Mt Everest. It is supported by an interactive CD Rom, Hillary - Nothing Venture, Nothing Win, which was compiled by UNITEC and contains a wealth of resources about Sir Edmund's life and humanitarian works, including more than 500 images and several audio and video clips.
Sir Edmund said: "I am delighted that all young New Zealanders can now learn about the ascent of Mt Everest and the preparation, commitment, teamwork and so many other qualities that are needed to achieve a common goal.
"This resource is packed full of adventure and challenge and shows students what they can achieve through hard work and commitment," Trevor Mallard said.
