Our role is to promote the needs and interests of all families to government and the wider community. To do this, we need to understand the issues affecting families. We listen to families, and organisations involved with them, to hear their views.
Our key functions are:

  • increasing awareness and understanding of the issues that families face encouraging public debate on family-related matters
  • looking at current research about families, identifying gaps in our knowledge and doing new and innovative research
  • publishing our research findings and other information we gather
  • looking at the impact of current and proposed government policies on families
  • contributing to the development of new policies that are supportive of families
  • providing advice about families to government agencies and other organisations.

  • increasing awareness and understanding of the issues that families face encouraging public debate on family-related matters

  • More information, research, articles can be found on the Families Commission website http://www.nzfamilies.org.nz/
