CONSERVATION CORPS AND YOUTH SERVICE CORPS PROGRAMMES
What are the Conservation Corps and Youth Service Corps Programmes?
Both programmes are for all young people � like you! � they help you get involved in conservation or local community projects and enable you to learn new skills through education and challenging recreation.
Youth Services Corps involves activities like:
- community activities (helping on holiday programmes, maintenance of school play equipment)
- restoring historic buildings
- working with community groups
- lifeskills education (which may include driver licence, first aid certificate)
- challenging recreation such as rafting, abseiling and tramping.
Conservation Corps involves activities like:
- native plant identification
- track clearing and sign maintenance
- pest and predator control
- other activities that support the community and help the environment, and
- lifeskills education (which may include driver licence, first aid certificate)
- challenging recreation such as rafting, abseiling and tramping.
What will I get out of it?
You�ll get a nationally recognised certificate of achievement and a range of Unit Standards dependent on the provider delivering the programme. You�ll also get heaps of practical skills and work experience for the future.
What you need to know?
There are a few things about the Conservation Corps and Youth Service Corps programme that you need to know:
- you don�t need to have any kind of qualification to join a Conservation or Youth Service Corp programme (ie, course)
- you can join a Conservation Corps programme if you are between 16 and 25
- you can join a Youth Service Corps programme if you are between 16 and 20 and have registered with Work and Income New Zealand or propose to register
- there are no fees (unless the course is residential and you might have to pay a small amount for your time there). You�ll get paid a training allowance each week, if you are eligible. But if you are 16 or 17 you�re not eligible for a training allowance.
Who runs the programme?
Both the Conservation Corps and Youth Service Corps programmes are run by people in your local community. Organisations like YMCAs, polytechnics, the Department of Conservation and youth and community groups run the programmes with funding from the Ministry of Youth Development.
How often do the programmes run?
Programmes start twice a year in late January and mid July and usually run for 20 weeks. Programmes are all over New Zealand and chances are there�s a provider near you!
