TOOLS4WORK WHO ARE WE, WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING, WHAT WE PLAN TO DO WHO ARE WE? Tools4Work is the schools brand of Skills4Work. Skills4Work is made up of the support services of the ITO Competenz, ATNZ and CTNZ. Skills4Work was created at the beginning of 2007 and offers a range of training and support to help people through their industry qualifications. Tools4Work provides mentoring and support for schools before students begin their industry training with Skills4Work and helps to prepare students to enter the workforce by: Promoting apprenticeships directly to over 40,000 + students each year Developing a school qualification in engineering, with 4,000 students taking it in 2007 as part of the school curriculum Helping 300 500 students into apprenticeships each year through the Smart Force mentoring program NEW RESOURCE PACKAGE FOR SCHOOLS Tools4Work recently launched its latest product the New Resource Pack (Mechanical Engineering Level 2 Unit Standards). This is a complete toolkit to assist schools in teaching carefully selected Mechanical Engineering units, aimed for use in School Work Shops or on work experience placements. This product has been expertly designed to give students a real, hands-on learning experience. The Resource Pack contains a range of pre-moderated learning and assessment material. Schools are able to purchase this product and reproduce all material as much as required for students in their school for a one year licensed period. This is a fantastic opportunity not only for schools, but also for Industry! You can help by opening your doors to schools in y our local community for work experience opportunities. We all need to work together to secure the future of our Industry! SMART FORCE EXPANDS! Last year, Tools4Work created Smart Force, a mentoring programme where School and Employment Advisors work closely with technology teachers and careers advisors to support students from school to industry. Students interested in the trades are personally mentored to achieve the necessary NCEA qualifications as well as find appropriate industry work experience. Tools4Work believes this personalised assistance will help develop students into capable, enthusiastic and work ready employees for Industry who are hard working and willing to learn. This should reduce the level of risk for companies who have in the past found that apprentices are not of the required calibre or do not have the right work ethic. Tools4Work will have 5 School and Employment Advisors operating round NZ by then end of 2007. Auckland based Schools and Employment Advisor, Thomas Knapp, says his role has been incredibly rewarding. SCHOOL AND INDUSTRY BETTER LINKS! Parents and teachers still regularly seem to push students into tertiary education. As a result, Tools4Work is consistently working to forge better links between Schools and Industry and promote careers within the Trades as a worthwhile career choice to teachers, students and their parents. Tools4work works to actively change the negative perception of apprenticeships by providing schools and parents with factual information and tangible examples of success. A continuous presence at expos and school career evenings provides a personalised career service, helping students to make career choices that are right for each individual. Activities such as the 2007 Otago Southland Grasskart Challenge, a Secondary School based Grass Kart design and build challenge, allows Tools4Work to promote an increased participation on engineering and technical subjects at school, that will eventually lead on to work experience and subsequent apprenticeships.
