4D - FOR DYSLEXIA As DFNZ members you're familiar with the Foundation's overall position on dyslexia - we believe that specific attention needs to be focused on dyslexia... now.
So with this in mind, we're about to launch a new initiative called 4D or For Dyslexia, and we wanted to let you know about it before our media statement is released.
WHAT IS 4D? 4D will, in a nutshell, empower New Zealand schools to crystallise their position on dyslexia and take charge of the dyslexic agenda by producing a written policy statement outlining their approach to this alternative way of thinking.
WHAT WILL 4D DO? 4D will make progress on dyslexia transparent 4D will enable schools to share best practice interventions and resources 4D will allow parents to inform themselves about which schools are doing the most to address dyslexia in their area.
WHAT DOES 4D STAND FOR? 4D stands 'For Dyslexia' or alternatively '4 Dyslexia'. The name is a play on 3D with the fourth dimension being creativity. And it expands the 3 Rs to include reading, writing, arithmetic and creativity.
WHY DO WE NEED 4D? As you are well aware, some 70,000 New Zealand children with dyslexia are not currently well catered for in New Zealand schools. And it's commonly accepted that there's a need for better interventions and learning tools.
4D will provide a mechanism for schools to do something concrete about dyslexia by assisting them to formulate their policy and intervention strategies and share their knowledge by making their plans public.
We have already had schools register their intention to join 4D. Encouraging your school to engage in this initiative would be something of value to all dyslexic New Zealanders.
4D will evolve as we receive feedback and questions so don't be shy about emailing us at [email protected]
WE'RE STILL ON THE HUNT FOR STORIES! We are still looking for families, students and successful creative people to share their stories publicly during DAW. Email us at [email protected] if you have a story to share.
We value your support and will be in touch again soon with more updates about the biggest and best DAW yet!
With kind regards, The Trustees DYSLEXIA FOUNDATION OF NZ
