What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a combination of abilities and difficulties affecting learning in one or more of reading, spelling and writing. Accompanying weaknesses may be identified in speed of processing, short-term memory, sequencing, auditory and/or visual perception, spoken language and motor skills. It is particularly related to mastering and using written language, which may include alphabetic, numeric and musical notation.

Dyslexia occurs despite normal teaching and is independent of socio-economic background or intelligence. It is however more easily detected in those with average or above average intelligence.

Some indicators of dyslexia

Things to look out for if you suspect you, a child, or a friend may be dyslexic include:

Particular difficulties in learning to read, write and spell

Difficulty in telling left from right

Reversal of letters and numbers

Difficulty in remembering sequences - eg learning the alphabet, days of the week, months of the year

Difficulty with concentration / paying attention

Difficulty in remembering and following oral instructions

Low self-esteem

Behavioural or emotional difficulties

Disorganisation

Co-ordination difficulties, eg in catching a ball
