To provide an education that best fits the aspirations of this generation, enhances the dreams of future generations, prepares for understanding the essence of past generations.

To equip our people with knowledge of their heritage, their language, their culture so they can handle the world at large with confidence and self determination.

To empower ones potential for learning as a base for progress in the modern world.

To make contributions of consequence. To care. To make our world a better place.

What are Wnanga?

Wnanga are New Zealand Tertiary Education Institutions that deliver educational programmes and opportunities within a Mori environment. There are currently 3 recognised Wnanga; Te Wnanga o Raukawa, Te Whare Wnanga o Awanuirangi and Te Wnanga o Aotearoa.

History

In 1984, the Waip Kkiri Centre in Te Awamutu was built. It was born from a vision to provide learning and employment opportunities for the increasing number of Mori, who were predominantly unemployed, with little or no job skills or qualifications.

Since gaining (Crown Tertiary) Wnanga status in 1994, Te Wnanga o Aotearoa has grown vigorously with 10 campuses throughout the North Island a new Business School Located in the Central Hamilton Business district and an extended family of Mori Education providers outreach

Sixteen years and thousands of students later, Te Wnanga o Aotearoa has developed as an authority to provide tertiary education in a fun, Mori learning environment. The programmes offer necessary skills, motivation, environment and qualifications to help tauira (students) make the most of their abilities and goals and reach their highest potential.

The majority of programmes at Te Wnanga o Aotearoa have an open entry criteria and every programme offers a combination of Wnanga and NZQA units with *nationally recognised qualifications. Most importantly a supportive Mori environment and bicultural philosophy provides a uniquely New Zealand equation for education.

The three Wnanga make a significant contribution to the increasing number of Mori taking up tertiary study and qualifications, not only in their own institutions but also as pathways into Universities, Polytechnics and Schools of Education. Many students are assisted to find employment, better opportunities or better understanding of themselves.
