Parenting the Bright Child

A PRESENTATION BY DR. SYLVIA RIMM

Dr. Rimm will share the principles of smart parenting for gifted children which she provides to parents at the Family Achievement Clinic, to the listeners of her national public radio programme, to viewers of her NBC-TV Today show interviews, and in her parenting books and columns. Adult-like vocabulary, unique thinking, and intense emotions establish special opportunities and some special risks for gifted children. Perfectionism, verbosity, over-empowerment, and underachievement are some of the issues that parents and teachers of gifted children struggle with. Dr. Rimm will also include helping gifted children cope with competition, personal and peer pressures, how to encourage them to love learning, and how to help them build sensitivity, resilience, humility, and confidence.

Biographical Sketch of Sylvia Rimm, Ph.D.

Dr. Sylvia Rimm is a child psychologist who directs the Family Achievement Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, and is a clinical professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She is on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Children and serves as a reviewer for Gifted Child Quarterly. Her interest in giftedness began as a parent advocate and a founding member of Wisconsin Council for Gifted Children. She is the co-author with Gary A. Davis, Ph.D., of Education of the Gifted and Talented, author of Keys to Parenting the Gifted Child, Why Bright Kids Get Poor Grades-And What You Can Do About It, Raising Preschoolers, and How to Parent So Children Will Learn. Her newest book is How Jane Won: 55 Successful Women Share How They Grew From Ordinary Girls to Extraordinary Women, which is the companion volume to See Jane Win See Jane Win(tm): The Rimm Report on How 1000 Girls Became Successful Women, which was a New York Times bestseller and was featured on the Oprah Winfrey and Today shows and in People Magazine. You can read Dr. Rimm's materials and excerpts from her books at www.sylviarimm.com and www.seejanewin.com.
Dr. Rimm writes a syndicated newspaper column and also writes for Redbook Magazine. She appears regularly on television, including ABC-TV's newsmagazine 20/20, and NBC's Today show and Weekend Today. Says Katie Couric, NBC Today show host, 'Dr. Rimm is a welcome voice of calm and reason-someone who offers practical advice, with almost immediate results. She's a guardian angel for families who need a little or a lot of guidance.'
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear this wonderful international speaker and author. This will be the only occasion that Dr Rimm will be giving a public presentation while she is in New Zealand
