Scholarship opportunities with Sir George Seymour College
Where could a career in travel and tourism take you? Ask Kylie Schofield, winner of a scholarship at Sir George Seymour College in the Essay Category of the annual Careers in Tourism Competition. After completing a course of study with the College, Kylie worked briefly for Fullers Cruises before taking up an opportunity to travel to the USA to work as a Camp Counsellor for Camp America.
Kylie says “Sir George Seymour prepared me for my new job in every way, eg interview techniques, CV preparation, knowledge of interview procedures, customer service unit standard and gave me a broad background in the tourism and travel industry.” She found the tutors “Fabulous – I’d never met more fun and motivated tutors. They opened my eyes to more than I ever imagined I would learn at the College”.
The Careers in Tourism Competition is an annual competition supported by TIANZ and this year, Sir George Seymour College is a major sponsor. Other sponsors include TAANZ (Travel Agents Association of NZ), ATTTO (Aviation, Travel & Tourism Training Organisation), Air New Zealand, Budget Rent-a-car, Scenic Circle Hotels, Skyline Enterprises and Real Journeys.
As well as a scholarship offered in each of the four categories of the competition, winners will also receive a whole range of prizes including Pure NZ gear, travel and accommodation and a laptop computer. Participating secondary schools can also win prizes such as computers, travel and accommodation and STAR funding. Entry packs and details will be posted out to secondary schools this week, alternatively for more information visit the competition website at www.careersintourism.co.nz.
As Sir George Seymour College we’re passionate about the industry we serve and really believe that a career in the travel and tourism industry can take those with the right skills and attitude to heights they never believed possible. To this end, as well as supporting annual competitions such as Careers in Tourism, we also offer secondary schools the opportunity to recognise their top Travel and Tourism Students by way of a trophy and partial scholarships towards tertiary study with the College. We also recognise the importance of developing new tourism ventures in New Zealand strengthening our image as a unique and safe travel destination. We therefore also offer a Maori Scholarship Programme which places an emphasis on Maori Tourism in New Zealand. As well as achieving National Certificates, students also participate in Te Reo and performing Kapa Haka. Graduates of this programme have gone on to varied careers in the travel and tourism industries.
