As knowledge of a foreign language is becoming more and more important, a new company in Auckland is setting out to make learning languages a fun and natural experience for children. "Fun Language Clubs" are giving 3 to 12 year olds the opportunity to learn French, German, Chinese, Spanish and English. Rather than struggling with lists of irregular verbs, children learn in an enjoyable, playful way.
A real phenomenon in Europe, these clubs began in Great Britain nearly fifteen years ago, and have since spread further afield to the United States, South America, Asia and Australasia.
The programme aims at teaching children the art of learning a foreign language effortlessly and naturally during their most formative years. "Children are much less inhibited about learning a language and thrive on new sounds, absorbing vocabulary at amazing speed" says Gisela Purcell, organiser of the Clubs in New Zealand.
Children attend the clubs once a week in small groups, where the activities include drama, songs, crafts and many popular games. Behind the fun appearance, lies a very carefully structured programme, designed for each age group. All clubs are run by teachers who receive comprehensive and on-going training in the use of the professionally-developed teaching materials and methods.
