| Eye examination for children with potential vision difficulties |

Independent optometrists in OPSM stores and participating NZ Association of Optometrists (NZAO) members will donate their professional services to
provide eye examinations for children with potential vision difficulties, on Sunday 31 August.
The eye examinations are available to children between the ages of 8 and 13 years with a Community Services Card. Preference will then be given to those in a reading recovery programme or having other indications of need.
The initiative is part of the NZAO's "Save Our Sight" month held throughout August to raise awareness about eye health.
OPSM and NZAO practices will provide glasses from a selected range free of charge to up to 500 of these children examined on the day who need glasses to improve their vision.
"Approximately 80 per cent of a child's learning is processed by the visual system indicating just how vital vision is in the development of literacy, and achievement in school," says Dr Lesley Frederikson, National Director of the NZAO. "If your child is experiencing learning difficulties, squinting when reading, getting frequent headaches or has poor coordination, they may be suffering due to poor vision."
Examination time is limited to Sunday 31 August, so parents are recommended to book in advance.
If any family or child cannot attend on the day, then there's the opportunity for parents to discuss with an independent optometrist in any OPSM store the opportunity for a school screening programme at their local school.
Appointments for Sunday 31 August can be arranged by phoning 0800 4EYE CARE or 0800 MY OPSM for details on participating optometrists in your local area.
