Professional Development Opportunities 
  • Waikato In Service Training invites registrations for the following professional development opportunities in Hamilton during Term 2 2002:
  • Measuring Pupil Progress and using Value Added Feedback

  • PRESENTER: Dr Therese Boustead, has a PhD in mathematics and three other undergraduate or graduate degrees in mathematics, zoology and education. Not only has she worked in a research institute but has also trained as a secondary mathematics/chemistry teacher and taught in Wellington for a short period. Dr Boustead tutored and lectured in mathematics and engineering mathematics at the University of Canterbury for a number of years before accepting the position of manager of the CEM Centre, University of Canterbury, when it opened in 1999. When taking the CEM Centre position, Dr Boustead saw the potential to provide schools throughout NZ with useful indicators that measure pupil, group and school progress against an outside benchmark. All data is kept confidential to each school so that a school can target and improve progress in a wide variety of subjects.
  • TARGET GROUP: Secondary school HODs and Senior Management staff. Other secondary teachers are also welcome.
  • PURPOSE: To explain how Value Added is measured, what feedback is given, and how to make use of the feedback. The session will include a basic workshop on analysis using Excel.
  • COURSE CONTENT:
  • To explain and discuss the ideas behind measuring pupil progress
  • To look at the samples of feedback including PARIS software
  • To illustrate and discuss pupil perception questionnaires
  • To discuss ways of making the best use of Value Added feedback
  • To give staff hands-on experience in doing further analysis with Excel.
  • Participants will use dummy feedback data provided on the day.

  • Hitchhikers Guide to the Mathematics Curriculum

  • PRESENTER: David Boardman , secondary adviser in Mathematics with School Support Services and facilitator for National Numeracy Projects.
  • TARGET GROUP:
  • Teachers of Year 9 �11 students
  • Teachers returning to teaching,
  • Teachers new to the new Zealand education system
  • Beginning teachers.
  • COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  • Participants will be able to:
  • Update their knowledge of Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum
  • Consider a range of teaching strategies in Mathematics
  • Consider a range of resources used in teaching Mathematics
  • DATE: Tuesday 14 May 2002 9.00 am - 3.00 pm
  • Numeracy and Literacy in the Mathematics Classroom

  • PRESENTER: David Boardman , secondary adviser in Mathematics with School Support Services and facilitator for National Numeracy Projects, and Merle Ramsay, secondary adviser in English with School Support Services.
  • TARGET GROUP: Teachers of Year 9 and 10, HOD and/or Assistant HOD Mathematics
  • COURSE CONTENT:
  • This course will encourage participants to explore and understand the national implications of National Administration Guidelines 1 on the teaching and learning programmes within their school.
  • The programme will include:
  • National Numeracy projects
  • Numeracy in the mathematics Classroom � some teaching strategies that incorporate number skills within other curriculum strands
  • Literacy in the mathematics classroom
  • Concerns � discussion of common issues

  • Elementary Elements

  • PRESENTER: Mary Allan, second time around H.O.D. Music at Hamilton Girls� High School. The in-between period was spent as H.O.D. Music at New Plymouth Boys� High School for 6 years. She enjoys Juniors and loves teaching this subject.
  • TARGET GROUP: Teachers of Years 9 and 10 Music
  • PURPOSE: To look at techniques designed to help Junior students understand the elements of music regardless of their previous musical experiences.
  • COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  • To perform a set piece using untuned percussion in groups
  • To work on an original sound story, graphically notate the scenes,practise and perform
  • To discuss the essential elements and to identify them in the sound stories
  • To relate this knowledge to various styles of music and to expand this list into practical examples
  • DATE: Friday 7 June 9.00 am - 3.00 pm
  • New Wine in Old Bottles

  • PRESENTER: Carol Jarman, Head of History at Hamilton Girls High School and regional facilitator for NCEA History.
  • TARGET GROUP: Teachers of History
  • PURPOSE: To look at new ways of teaching history and �new� topics
  • COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  • To look at new ways of teaching history e.g. how poetry, music and film can be used to bring life to a history programme
  • To look at some topics which at present appear to be neglected e.g Australian history, junior history
  • To look at more interactive methods of teaching
  • DATE: Friday 14 June 9.00 am - 3.00 pm
  • Surviving in the Squeeze Position - a Conference for Middle Managers

  • PRESENTERS: Keynote speakers from the Ministry of Education and Education Review Office
  • Seminars and workshops presented by practising teachers and education consultants
  • TARGET GROUP: Current and aspiring Heads of Departments/Faculties, Teachers in Charge of Curriculum areas and Deans.
  • PURPOSE: To provide a forum for middle managers to consider issues, current philosophies and generic work smart practices, and to network with colleagues
  • DATE: Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd July
