Barnardos
Our vision: A society where children can grow up to be caring people and quality parents
Our mission: To help New Zealand children experience a cycle of success through effective care, support and education.

What is Barnardos?
Barnardos is a child focused organisation that provides education, care and support services to children and their families. Working under the principle that children need security and the opportunity to develop their potential, Barnardos works within the community to give families access to a broad range of support services. Barnardos is New Zealand's largest childcare and family support service provider, last year working with over 6,700 children and 5,200 parents and families.

History of Barnardos
In 1866 Dr Thomas Barnardo saw the desperation of the street kids living in the slums of London's East End. Deciding to devote himself to the improvement of their situation he established Dr Barnardos Homes for destitute children providing food, shelter and education.

The demand for places in Dr Barnardos homes grew as did the need to raise money to support them. In 1867 the first of thousands of donations was sent from New Zealand.

The first Barnardos New Zealand programmes began in 1972. Today it is an independent organisation that provides many different services to children and their families throughout the country. Continuing in the tradition of Thomas Barnardo, Barnardos aim is to ensure all children get the best possible start in life.
