Early Education targeted for extra funding. April 08, 2002

At the NZEI conference Education Minister Travor Mallard announced that early childhood education will receive a $10m boost to promoting preschool education. It will be used to identify areas where children are not currently sent to preschool and ensure more consistent access. "Quality early childhood education is important for lifting standards throughout the education system," Mr Mallard said. Currently, 172,000 children are enrolled in 4100 institutions offering preschool programmes. Statistics show that, while attendance for 3 and 4 year olds is high, significant numbers of Maori and Pacific Island do not participate.
