|NEW ZEALAND'S EDUCATION
Hillary Outdoors is a not-for-profit charitable trust with a long history of providing high quality outdoor education programmes for schools, businesses and the general public. Our programmes for youth offer individuals the chance to develop their leadership and teamwork skills during the school holidays, in Holiday Action Challenge programmes, or as part of school groups during term time. There is the opportunity to undertake aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award as part of these programmes.
Operating out of two stunning, remote locations, Tongariro and Great Barrier Island, Hillary Outdoors Education Centres provide the perfect environment for leaving modern digital distractions behind and getting closer to nature. Participants are engaged in a wide range of outdoor activities; used to build confidence, solve problems and work with others under the guidance of experienced instructors.
For people looking for a career in the outdoors, Hillary Outdoors also offers tertiary training programmes at the Tongariro Centre.
We are a full time Outdoor Education Centre and design our programmes around the real needs of the industry. The benefits of learning within a working centre are priceless, students have the opportunity to see how a centre is run and to learn from current instructors. In addition to this, there is also work experience with other organisations which broadens students’ experiences and future job prospects.
There are two tertiary courses available; the Certificate in Outdoor Adventure Skills and Leadership Level 4, and the National Diploma in Outdoor Recreation (Instruction) Level 5. Both programmes are based at our Tongariro Centre, surrounded by some of the best scenery in New Zealand.
