The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre of New Zealand (OPC)

If you want to be your best, you need to learn from the best...The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre of New Zealand (OPC) is one of New Zealand’s leading providers of Outdoor Education with over 40 years experience. OPC is where instructors themselves choose to train because of our reputation for quality instruction.

OPC has 2 centres located in the spectacular Tongariro National Park and ruggedly beautiful Great Barrier Island. Schools and individuals recognise that not only do these locations offer unique opportunities to enjoy some of New Zealand’s best scenery, the centres offer an enormous range of activities, from caving and canoeing at Tongariro through to snorkelling and sea kayaking at Great Barrier. The enthusiastic, highly qualified outdoor education team are one of the biggest draw cards - their interaction, team building and encouragement of participants to master new skills, helps grow confidence and create lifelong memories.

The organisation is a charitable trust and when Sir Edmund Hillary, the great explorer and first man to conquer Mt Everest, put his name to it back in 1972, he quipped that OPC was his legacy to New Zealand - with its unique combination of outdoor environment, adventure and education. Contributing positively to the life journey of young people through adventure and rich outdoor learning experiences that develop care and respect for self, others and place, in the spirit of Sir Edmund Hillary.

OPC caters for a wide range of individuals and groups, whether international or local. Schools can use courses to help students achieve National Curriculum requirements for their subjects; gain specific Unit or Achievement Standards or simply give them an opportunity to do something truly “character building”! Options for schools include core 4 or 5 day Hillary Step programmes, 5 week programmes that are ideal for teams or special groups, such as prefects, first 15s, future leaders etc and the chance to customise your own programme to suit mastering a particular skill or providing a memorable experience.

Holiday programmes and tertiary training are also offered at OPC. Adults can enjoy a great range of learning experiences too; as individuals participating in one of our skills courses, corporate or special interest groups focusing on leadership, team building etc and again, we are happy to tailor courses to suit your unique goals or circumstances.

OPC has two centres in remote and unspoilt environments, one at Tongariro in the National Park for a mountain adventure and one at Great Barrier Island for a marine experience.
