Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi
Rukuhia te mātauranga ki tōna hōhonutanga me tōna whānuitanga.
Pursue knowledge to its greatest depths and its broadest horizons.
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi: indigenous-university is a quality provider of Māori programmes within the tertiary education sector in Aotearoa. Our vision is to promote, grow and sustain Māori language, knowledge and culture in all of its manifestations.
We are unique in the tertiary sector of New Zealand, delivering programmes that are distinctive in many ways. We are the only wānanga that offers programmes from foundation through to PhD. They are designed to support and promote academic excellence, and are benchmarked against those of other institutions. They are portable and transferable nationally and internationally. Therefore, it is important that we explore and integrate the Māori world view and those of other indigenous peoples, and engage in and critique the world views of others.
As a wānanga, Awanuiārangi is charged with delivering tertiary programmes grounded in kaupapa Māori and āhuatanga Māori. This means that Māori knowledge and practices are key components of the academic programmes, teaching delivery and student experiences. Some of our programmes have a strong Māori language emphasis; others are designed to support new and emerging language learners. Mātauranga Māori and mātauranga-a-iwi underpin all qualifications, ensuring students have a strong cultural foundation and political literacy on which to build their academic achievement.
The rigour applied to the pursuit of academic excellence is based upon two key philosophies. Firstly, that where research is a requirement, it will focus on solutions to issues, as opposed to simply describing problems. Secondly, the determination that programmes have a transformational element. The focus is not only for students to gain academic credentials, but also to ensure their learning has a tangible, positive outcome for the communities they come from. Transformative approaches to educational achievement are a cornerstone of our broad and unique programme offerings, as we work to provide an education that will encourage and support community development and growth.

When I was looking for a tertiary provider to help fulfil my life-long desire to become a teacher, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi was the logical choice. Not only is it a world-class facility with exceptional lecturers and a cutting-edge curriculum, but studying at this institution allows me to study from home and be supported by my family.
Having been raised in a bicultural environment, I wanted to attend a facility that would not only provide me with the credentials I need to teach, but also immerse me in my heritage and culture, so that I would leave not only a qualified teacher but a well-rounded individual who is in touch with who I am and where I come from.
Awanuiārangi is not just a learning environment, but a community of like-minded, motivated individuals who support you every step of the way.

Bachelor of Māori Performing Arts (2nd-year student)
I was brought up through the kapa haka ranks of Te Waka Huia and Waihirere, groups my parents performed with, so I’ve been surrounded by performance my whole life. To study for a degree that combines the things I love most in the world is an unbelievable opportunity.
The course covers all aspects of Māori performing arts, both traditional and contemporary. One of the most exciting components is haka theatre: a concept that combines haka, dance, waiata and theatre. It’s powerful – an extension of traditional kapa haka that opens the door to a whole new area of expression and feeling.
Studying for this tohu has lifted my self-confidence both academically and as a performer. It has opened so many doors. Since enrolling with Awanuiārangi I’ve performed as part of its Super 12s team at Auckland’s Queens Wharf; performed the lead role in the haka theatre play Released; was a member of Te Waka Huia at Te Matatini in 2013; and was one of four BMPA students invited to China in 2013 to perform haka on Chinese television. These are only a few highlights in 18 months of opportunity. It’s been amazing.
