The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre of New Zealand (OPC)

The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre of New Zealand (OPC) is a not-for-profit charitable trust adventure organisation with  a long history of providing high quality training programmes for those wanting careers in the outdoors or for those who work in the outdoors already but want to increase their skills and knowledge to become more effective. We are a registered Private Training Establishment that receives funding from the Tertiary Education Commission for approved tertiary programmes.

OPC programmes differ from most other tertiary programmes because we are a fulltime outdoor centre and design our programmes around the real needs of the industry. The benefits of learning within a working centre are huge. Students have the chance to fully understand how a centre is organised and run and to learn from a vast range of current instructors. In addition to this ongoing work experience within OPC, many courses also contain work experience with other organisations which broadens students' experiences and future job prospects.

All of our qualifications are structured within the OPC values, so personal development and the development of leadership and facilitation skills are just as important as acquiring the technical skills needed to safely work with other people in the outdoors. Group sizes are small which allows for this development to take place in a supported environment through learning skills, teaching skills and having adventures together.

OPC offers expert instruction and training, and due to the nature of its location at the edge of Tongariro National Park, allows for a diverse range of activities and experiences.

We offer:

Certificate in Outdoor Adventure Skills and Leadership

  • Duration: 34 weeks, full time
  • National Qualification Level 4
  • Equivalent Full Time Student (EFTS) 1

National Diploma in Outdoor Recreation (Instruction)

  • Duration: 35 weeks, full time
  • National Qualification Level 5
  • Equivalent Full Time Student (EFTS) 1.
