  • You will have had valuable teacher training experiences and be knowledgeable of all marautanga Māori primary curriculum from Year 1 to Year 8. 
  • You will be trained to be a valued teacher capable of delivering quality curriculum, solely in total immersion Māori language.

 Education Pathways:   

 Te Wānanga Takiura aspires to:

  • provide a quality, 3 year Kura Kaupapa Māori medium education and teacher training programme totally in Māori language, culminating in a Bachelor of Teaching Kura Kaupapa Māori degree, (He Paetahi Ako Kura Kaupapa Māori). 
  • immerse the values of mana tikanga Māori, mana reo Māori, mana tangata Māori, mana wairua Māori, mana mātauranga Māori, and mana Māori pedagogy into all its programmes. 
  • encourage student teacher trainees from a wide spectrum of the community, including graduates from total immersion Māori schools, mature students fluent in the Māori language seeking a career change and graduates from other Māori language courses, such as our Rumaki Reo programme.

 Employment Pathways:           

 When a student graduates from Te Wānanga Takiura you will be:

  • fluent and confident to communicate in all literary forms of Māori language 
  • qualified to teach in all types of primary schools: 
  • Kura Kaupapa Māori Schools
  • Total Immersion Māori
  • Bilingual Schools
  • Total Immersion Māori or Bilingual Units in Mainstream Schools
  • Mainstream Schools
  • teaching selected subjects in Wharekura Schools or Secondary Schools. 

Entry Requirements:    

  1. To all candidates, competency or the ability to communicate fluently in te reo Māori is an essential and an absolute pre requisite and will be thoroughly assessed during an extensive face to face, total immersion Māori, interview process. Students who don’t have oral competency or fluency will not be accepted into the programme. 
  2. To be admitted to this programme, candidates under 20 years of age must have University Entrance, as described by the NZEA common standards: 
  • 42 credits at  level 3 or higher on the NZQF
  • including a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3, or higher, in each of 2 subjects from the approved list
  • a further 14 credits at level 3 from 2 additional domains on the NZQF
  • a minimum of 14 credits at level 1 or higher for Mathematics
  • a minimum of 8 credits at level 2 or higher in Te Reo Māori (4 reading; 4 writing) 
  1. In the absence of the above academic requirements and/or for applicants over 20 years of age these students must: 
  • provide convincing evidence of being able to succeed in tertiary study at the degree level
  • provide a detailed CV including a full documentation of their educational history and background
  • provide supporting testimony as to their dedication to teaching in Māori medium education and in all its various forms
  • provide references or testimonials from persons who are able, to endorse the credentials, the commitment, the inherent ability of the applicant to successfully complete a 3 year, total immersion Māori, Bachelor of Teaching, Kura Kaupapa Māori degree

      Commitment, dedication and industry are required to succeed in this programme, allowing no loss of focus or other issues to infiltrate or distract one.  Students who cannot adhere to these requirements should not enrol at Te Wānanga Takiura.

 Graduate Profile:         

 Te Wānanga Takiura guarantees that a graduate student of its total immersion, Māori language Rumaki Reo programme:

  • will be competent in understanding and speaking te Reo Māori following one year of study. 
  • will graduate with a Te Wānanga Takiura qualification of a “Certificate in Oral Māori Language Fluency” up to Level 4 and approved by NZQA. 
  • will be at an appropriate level of fluency and competency to enrol in a 3 year total immersion Māori, Bachelor of Teaching Kura Kaupapa Māori, teacher training programme.

 Education Pathways:   

 This is an oral Māori language educational pathway that guarantees to produce in one academic year of 34 weeks, students competent in te Reo Māori who are able to understand, to speak, to communicate with other speakers on any or most topics. The major emphases are to develop each students’ oral skills and competency in te Reo Māori, to be able to think, to speak, to question, to reason, to answer confidently in Māori and to sustain the oral delivery of prepared seminars exclusively in te Reo Māori for up to an hour, followed by questions, answers and discussion.

 Employment Pathways:           

  • University graduates who have completed a variety of bachelor degrees but are still looking to reclaim themselves as Māori through an improved proficiency in communicative Māori language.  These have included science graduates, arts graduates and law graduates. 
  • Students may use this Rumaki Reo programme as a bridging pathway into tertiary qualifications and subsequent employment such as a Bachelor of Teaching Kura Kaupapa Māori.

 Entry Requirements:   

There are no academic requirements for entry but you will have to demonstrate a 'passion for wanting to learn te 'Reo'. Strong attendance is absolutely critical. Anything below 80% will not be accepted.

It must be your principal focus for the year allowing no other issues to infiltrate or to distract you. Students who cannot adhere to this commitment and dedication should not enrol at Te Wānanga Takiura.
