The University of Otago Language Centre is internationally recognised for the quality of its teaching and research and its diverse study body.

 

Courses include:

 

Courses include general English, English for Academic Purposes, preparation for IELTS, iBT TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge Mainsuite examinations, English for Groups, English for Teachers, English for Otago (entry into undergraduate and programmes at Otago) and non IELTS pathways to Foundation Year.

 

 

The Language Centre is the only registered examination centre south of Christchurch for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Internet-Based Test of English as a Foreign Language (iBT TOEFL) and Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) examinations.

 

Placement tests on arrival ensure that students are with students of similar ability. The Language Centre offers 5 levels of English tuition from elementary to advanced. Students are taught for 22.5 hours per week including supervised independent learning and activities.

 

Teachers have university degrees (undergraduate and postgraduate level) and TESOL qualifications and the maximum class ratio is one teacher to 16 students.

 

The Language Centre welcomes up to 250 students per year from a number of countries including Vietnam, Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Chile, Russia and Germany.

 

Facilities

 

Teachers use the latest teaching technologies and students have full access to our Sony multimedia language lab, iMac computer suite and independent learning centre.

 

Students have access to all University of Otago resources including laboratories, computer suites, libraries, gymnasiums, lecture theatres, clubs and societies, recreation and health services. 

 

Services

 

Student Services provide professional support on personal issues, academic concerns, an online visa service, and advice on accommodation options. An accommodation service is on site to place students in a number of excellent home-stays options.

 

Activities

 

Weekly sporting and social activities enable students to meet other international students and New Zealanders. Activities include visits to Queenstown, Fiordland, and Central Otago, visiting a chocolate factory, wildlife reserves, farms, museums, sporting events and activities such as skiing, horse riding, ice-skating, art classes and golf.

 

Fees

Tuition fee: $437 per week - this includes a text book

Student Services fee: $250 - this includes an ID card giving access to all services and facilities on campus and retail/entertainment/transport discounts in Dunedin

Homestay Placement fee: $220

Homestay fee: $238 per week

Medical Insurance - Varies on length of stay

Free airport pick up if staying with a homestay
