Rangi Ruru Girls' School

Discover the Rangi spirit
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School is an independent (private) Year 7-13 day and boarding school in the northwest of Christchurch.

Rangi Ruru is one of New Zealand’s top performing schools for academic, cultural, creative and sporting pursuits.  Founded in 1889, we are a school with a proud history, a strong pastoral care network and set of values.  With a roll of 650 students, including 120 boarders, Rangi Ruru is small enough to ensure that teachers know their students well and are able to provide personalised learning, and yet large enough to offer a wide range of subjects and programmes.

Our Academic Programmes
Rangi Ruru is consistently in the top 3% for academic achievement in NCEA examinations.  In 2012 a record number of girls gained highly sought after and respected scholarships.  We offer a broad curriculum with nearly 40 subject choices.  The school has a strong academic focus and small classes (maximum of 25 students).  Specialist teachers provide a supportive and challenging education for all students.  We prepare our students for life after school, including tertiary education, with a majority of girls accepted into universities in New Zealand and overseas.  Additional support and extension happens within the classroom and with the school’s Learning Support staff including a specialists Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programme.

Our Music, Cultural and Creative Programmes
Rangi Ruru offers an extensive range of creative and cultural activities, including drama, debating, speech, chess, dance, creative writing, philosophy and international club.  Performing arts, music, dance and drama are very popular at Rangi Ruru.  The school has many opportunities for girls to demonstrate their talents in a range of events, competitions and performances.  A large number of our girls are involved in instrumental and vocal music with the school offering many music groups including chamber music, orchestras and choirs.

Our Sport and Outdoor Programmes
Rangi Ruru is one of New Zealand’s top schools for sporting success.  With over 35 sporting options we have a 96% participation rate at both social and competitive levels.  A significant number of students while at school, or later, go on to represent their sport at local, national and international levels.  Many of these girls are part of the school’s specialist sports programme, SOAR, which provides mentoring and support for our outstanding sportswomen.  The school also provides opportunities to be involved in many other outdoor experiences including outward bound.

Our International Students
Rangi Ruru values the global perspective international students bring to the school.  International students are fully integrated into school life and the classroom.  Girls live either in the modern, onsite boarding house or homestay with a school-approved New Zealand family.  Specialist English language support (ESOL) is available at all levels on an individual or small group basis.  For girls wishing to go on to university study, we prepare students for IELTS, TOEFL and SAT international English examinations where necessary.

Our Facilities
Rangi Ruru provides specialist teaching spaces including music, science and technology facilities, large group learning spaces, and sports facilities including gymnasium, fitness centre, and pool.  The school is currently undertaking an exciting redevelopment which will provide us with a modern learning environment that connects us with the world, our community and each other.  Visit our website for up to date information on the rebuild progress.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School.  Inspiring, challenging and empowering... that’s the Rangi spirit.
