A range of Training programmes are available through the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for eligible people (16 years or older) wanting to gain new skills and improve their chances of getting a job.

Foundation Focused Training Opportunities (FFTO)

Foundation-Focused Training Opportunities (FFTO) programmes focus on learners gaining a valuable set of foundation skills that enables them to move effectively into sustainable employment and/or higher levels of tertiary education.

FFTO is fully subsidised training for learners 16 years or older, usually with low qualifications that have been referred to a FFTO programme by Work and Income New Zealand. Further information on FFTO eligibility is available on the TEC website.
Updated FFTO handbook now available

Youth Training

Youth Training (YT) focuses on learners gaining a valuable set of foundation skills that enables them to move effectively into sustainable employment and/or higher levels of tertiary education.

YT is free to learners who meet the following eligibility criteria:

Learners must be 16 years of age or older and meet the standard of citizenship detailed in Rule ENR135 and be eligible to enrol in a YT programme as outlined in Rule ENR137.

Further information is available on the TEC website

Youth Guarantee

The purpose of the Youth Guarantee initiative is to improve the educational achievements of targeted 16 and 17 year olds by providing them with an opportunity to participate in a range of vocational courses free of charge. It is a part of a wider youth opportunities package designed to create new work, education and training opportunities for young people. Further information is available on the TEC website
