ICT in the Education Sector

The new ICT environment will create more options and opportunities for students. It will create new ways of teaching and learning and will open up new and innovative ways of co-operating with other educators.

The e-learning environment will be characterised by:

  • Student-centred learning;
  • Active, exploratory, and inquiry-based learning;
  • Collaborative work;
  • Information exchange;
  • Critical thinking and informed decision making.

    However, ICT in the education sector does bring with it significant challenges that will need to be carefully managed. Certain factors may limit the ability of some students to take full advantage of online information systems, particularly the Internet, and this needs to be taken into account. These factors include socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, skill levels, geographical location, and the quality and capacity of the telecommunications infrastructure. Such limitations on access are often referred to as the "digital divide".

    Other major challenges will be the decisions that government and schools make about ICT investments, and the ongoing costs associated with those decisions, as well as the nature and quality of ICT use in education and teaching. High-quality ICT use is both learner-centred and teacher-intensive.
