Having a good teacher is an important factor in ensuring that our tamariki learn well. But do we know how to train a teacher to work appropriately with Maori children? Te Puni Kokiri has released an audit report on The Quality of Teacher Training for Teaching Maori Students. The findings provide useful feedback on the quality of pre-service teacher education with a view to equipping teachers with the appropriate skills, knowledge and attitudes to more effectively teach Maori students in the classroom. The report contains recommendations to improve the training of new teachers to make them more responsive to Maori students. TPK will be organising a hui with teacher education providers early next year to explain the findings and listen to feedback. Contact [email protected] for a copy of the report.
