In 2007 Otago Polytechnic is offering a new Diploma in Interactive Multimedia Development. The qualification is designed to launch graduates into the digital media industry � a significant, exciting and rapidly expanding international market for New Zealand business.

Comprised of courses spanning the fields of art, design and information technology, the diploma will be an extremely commercially relevant and challenging qualification for those who have an interest in subjects like graphics, fine art, communications or computer game development.

The last ten years have seen rapid advances in computer technologies for producing, manipulating and interacting with sound, images and animation, according to Academic Leader for the Diploma, Patricia Haden.

Computer-generated graphics and media already play an essential role in modern film and television she says. And as the entertainment, advertising, tourism and education industries embrace the possibilities of interactive multimedia the demand for those with well-developed skills in the area will continue to grow.

�To service this demand, we will be training students in three areas, �says Haden.

�First, fine arts, so students work on the creative visualisation and production of images and sound. Design so they understand the principles of layout and presentation; and information technology for the skills to implement complex interactive behaviours and effective media delivery.�

The Diploma in Interactive Multimedia Development will be particularly good for �artistic, creative types� with an interest in computer animation, games and pictures.

It is envisaged that Otago Polytechnic will launch a bachelor�s degree in Interactive Multimedia Development in 2008. Applications for the Diploma in Interactive Multimedia Development in 2007 are now open.
