Darwin

29 September  - 13 January 2008

The most in-depth exhibition ever mounted on this renowned naturalist and his theory of evolution, is coming to Auckland.

This exhibition explores the extraordinary life and discoveries of Charles Darwin, whose striking insights in the 19th century forever changed the perception of the origin of our own species as well as the myriad other species on this planet and launched modern biological science. Visitors of all ages will experience the wonders Darwin witnessed on his journey as a curious and adventurous young man aboard the HMS Beagle on its historic five-year voyage (1831-1836) to the Galapagos Islands and beyond.

Amendments to Darwin Programme

Most schools have already received information from us about the Darwin exhibition.  However, please note the following changes:

Years 12, 13
The DARWIN exhibition sits well alongside the Human Evolution programme run by Virgil, and the NZ Evolution/Speciation programme run by Sean in the Natural History galleries. COSTS $7 exhibition*, +$4 Human Evolution, +$4 NZ Evolution.

Years 7-8
Educator led session in Learning Centre + exhibition. 2 hours total. Available 29 October through to end of year  COST $3 + $7* exh.

Years 9-10
Museum educator facilitated session in the exhibition. COST $3 + $7* exh.

Years 1-6
There is a lot of material in the exhibtion that will be of interest to younger students with some excellent interactive activities. The exhibition would work well alongside a visit to the Natural History galleries and/or a visit to Weird & Wonderful. COST $7* exh + $2 Weird & Wonderful.

*Member Schools pay $6 for the exhibition.

The link below is to the American Museum of Natural History's Darwin mini-site for educators - while some material is not relevant to our curriculum - it gives an excellent overview of the exhibtion and the learning experiences that can be gained from it.

Darwin Education Resources

The Museum will create two trails for groups self-guiding in the exhibition, suitable for years 5 to 10

The trails will link the exhibition with the Natural History galleries and the Volcanoes gallery. One will focus on Darwin and his life and work, the other will focus on some of the examples of evolution and species unique to NZ.

As a special offer Auckland ZOO and Auckland Museum have agreed to put together a $10 DOUBLE suitable for end of year excursions.

Any group booking to visit the DARWIN exhibition and the ZOO on the same day will receive a discount at each venue - so you pay $5 at the ZOO and $5 at Auckland Museum for the DARWIN exhibition.

Educators at the two venues will prepare a trail that highlights specific parts of the exhibition and illustrate those ideas with specific live animal examples at the ZOO.

American Museum of Natural History

We can make a copy of material available on the American Museum (see link above) on CD for any school that makes a booking for the exhibition.  To order your free copy, contact Education Services on 09 306 7040 or [email protected].
