Enable New Zealand administers the Ministry of Health spectacle subsidy for children. This subsidy provides assistance for children with vision problems in low-income families.

Who can apply?

The spectacle subsidy can be accessed if your child:
has a disability as defined by the Ministry of Health,
is under eight years of age,
has undergone a professional eye examination and has a prescription stating a corrective device is required (provided by either an ophthalmologist or an optometrist),
your family has either a valid Community Services Card or a High Health Use Card.

How to apply?

An appointment can be made with an ophthalmologist or optometrist via:
self-referral,
Plunket,
the vision and hearing tester from your child's school,
your G.P.

The ophthalmologist or optometrist will complete the spectacles subsidy application form on your behalf, and forward it to Enable New Zealand for processing.

Specialised assessors may be interested in recent changes to the spectacles subsidy for children. These changes are effective from 1 March 2003.
