Trades Academies

Trades Academies are part of the Governments Youth Guarantee initiative, and provide a transition programme for enrolled year 11-13 secondary school students. There are schools-based and TEO-based Trades Academies. A TEO-based Trades Academy is a partnership between one or more secondary schools and a tertiary education organisation such as an industry training organisation, a polytechnic or a private training establishment.

In 2012, the TEC will fund 11 TEO-based Trade Academies, with approximately 1700 fees-free places available.

Students enrolled at a Trades Academy remain enrolled in a secondary school. Each Trades Academy will deliver a trades-related programme that should include both NCEA (Level 2) credits and a nationally transferable tertiary qualification (Levels 1-3 on the National Qualification Framework (NQF)).

For further information please see the Trades Academies section on the Ministry of Education website.

Funding

Payment to TEO-based Trades Academies will be made in monthly instalments from the date their contract is agreed with the TEC.

An in-year review of funding will be undertaken after receipt of the first manual report from providers. A reallocation of the contracted volume of places may be undertaken after this date.

Any recovery of funding will occur in January of the following year.

Reporting

All data must be reported through the SDR or ITR as appropriate. Providers using the SDR must use Code 24. Part-year reports are due 30 April and 31 August 2012. The final report is due 31 December 2012.
