Advice for those choosing courses
‘Choosing your Course’ is a new brochure produced by the NZQA for people considering enrolling in tertiary courses explaining what students should look for when they choose a course or qualification.
NZQA communications manager Bill Lennox says ‘Choosing your Course’ aims to make students more aware of concepts like course approval.
“NZQA registers private training establishments and approves their courses. Courses in state providers are also quality checked. Learners need to understand the level of assurance this national approval system provides. They also need help with the questions they should ask before signing up, drawing loans and paying fees.
“We produced ‘Choosing your Course’ partly because of the number of calls we get from students who have been dissatisfied with their courses. Sometimes it is the fault of the provider but very often students have not checked things out in advance. Simple things like asking employers whether or not they value a qualification and visiting the premises to see if they like the feel of the place.
“We hope that ‘Choosing your Course’ will take its place alongside other sources of advice for students who have to make important choices from a very wide array of options,” Bill Lennox said.
‘Choosing your Course’ is available from schools and other education providers, libraries, the Citizens Advice Bureau and Career Services rapuara. It can also be viewed on the NZQA web site.
