Boost for Mori Teachers.
New scholarships and study awards will be made available to teachers and other professionals working in the field of Mori education.
Twenty-five study awards will be made available to kura kaupapa Mori teachers to help them gain or complete training. Kura kaupapa Mori teachers are currently exempt from teacher registration requirements but this exemption will be removed from 2003 under the Education Standards Act.
Eleven new scholarships will be available to increase the number of speech language therapists, eight of which are targeted at Mori. Speech language difficulties are seen as one of the greatest impediments to developing literacy.
There will also be six new scholarships to increase the number of sign language interpreters fluent in Mori in a bid to improve access for deaf Mori to their culture and immersion education settings.
Development and support for Mori education training providers will be funded to the tune of $4.9 million over four years to help improve the quality and scope of courses available.
