The TalkLink Trust

The TalkLink Trust was established in Auckland in1991 to provide assistive technology services for people who have communication disabilities. The TalkLink Trust operates two centres, one in Auckland and one in Wellington.

TalkLink centres employ assistive technology specialists who have qualifications and/or experience in speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, neuropsychology, teaching, technical and administration support.

Services:
The TalkLink team work with people of all ages, who have difficulties in the areas of speaking, writing and/or learning. Support people, including family, whanau, therapists, and teachers or tutors, are encouraged to be part of the TalkLink process. This helps to ensure that TalkLink clients have appropriate support in the process of using assistive communication technology.

TalkLink services include:
- Information provision via phone, fax, and e-mail. Information Days are also held at the centres,
-Assessments, to determine skills, areas of difficulty, communication goals and possible tools to enhance communication.
-Equipment trials as part of the assessment process.
-Training and support in the use of communication strategies and technology
-Funding applications for assistive technology are made by the team, to the appropriate funding agencies.
-Consultations with other professionals
-Training courses and seminars on topics such as communication strategies, specialised software, and a general overview of Assistive Communication Technology.

Assistive Communication Technology solutions range from low technology options such as word boards or communication books, to high technology options such as voice output communication devices, specialised software and hardware.

For people with physical disabilities there are many alternative means by which they can operate technological devices. Options include a range of switches, keyboards, computer access software, and computer voice control.

Cost:
TalkLink services are generally provided at no cost to the client. Some clients may be eligible for government funding for communication technology. Funding options will be discussed during the TalkLink process.

The Referral Process:
Referral forms can be requested by phone, fax or e-mail. ACC clients must be referred by an ACC Case Manager. Some school-aged students will need to be referred by the Group Special Education Technology Team. TalkLink staff will be happy to clarify eligibility criteria.
