GROWTH, CHALLENGE & CHANGE: MUSIC THERAPY METAPHOR THROUGH SONG
This keynote will examine and explore the concepts of growth, challenge and change as they relate to clinical music therapy through the metaphor of song. Original songs that illustrate these areas will be included in the presentation, with an emphasis on community music therapy.
Dr. Robert E. Krout is Music Therapy Programme Leader in the Wellington Conservatorium of Music at Massey University.

THE SING AND GROW PROGRAMME: FOLLOW UP
The Sing and Grow Programme provides early intervention to families in marginal and socially disadvantaged communities where there may be high levels of criminal activity and violence . This paper updates the report given by Vicki Abad at the NZSMT Conference in 2002.
MUSIC THERAPY AND PSYCHOLOGY IN THE TREATMENT OF THE NEUROPSYCHIATRIC SEQUELAE OF ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY
This paper presents a case study describing the use of psychological principles and strategies, and an individual; music therapy programme, to decrease wandering and agitated verbal behaviour of a client who had sustained a brain injury. The most significant result was that of a reduction in the use of PRN medication associated with episodes of agitation.
Kate Williams is currently Director of Music of Therapy Connections and Production Editor for the Australian Music Therapy Association National Publications Committee and holds a position on the Queensland State Executive Committee. She has worked at Ipswich Special School, the Endeavour Foundation and in the Sing and Grow Project. .

COMPARING TWO MUSIC THERAPY TREATMENT APPROACHES FOR BOYS WHO HAVE ADHD
Music therapists employ various psychotherapeutic frameworks as foundations for their clinical practice. This study compares the impact of two contrasting music therapy treatment approaches, direct teaching and improvisation, on the level of motor impulsivity displayed by adolescent boys who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Daphne is Chairperson of the NZSMT and Tutor on the Master of Music Therapy programme at Massey University. Daphne has worked with children and adolescents with a wide range of disabilities, predominantly in special education settings, and is currently specialising in work with adolescents who have social and emotional needs.

Two 45 minute music skills workshops which will be hands-on, exploratory, and creative in nature. Each session will be repeated to enable attendance at both workshops.
Versatile musicians and educators Bruce Brown and Leigh Jackson both teach in the jazz studies programmes in the Wellington Conservatorium of Music at Massey University.

PROCESSES IN GROUP MUSIC THERAPY: REDUCING AGITATION IN INDIVIDUALS WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND RELATED DISORDERS
This paper will explore the use of group music therapy for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRDs) who display agitation. Music therapy methods and group processes will be examined drawing on current interrelated research and clinical examples.
Natalie Nugent is an Australian Music Therapist recently settled in Dunedin. She has practiced for six years, mainly in aged care and completed a Masters degree in Music Therapy Research in 2000. She is currently working with children with special needs.

MUSIC THERAPY ASSISTED COMMUNICATION WITH CHILDREN WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES
This presentation, prompted by the rewards of assisting children with severe disabilities to communicate in a way meaningful to them, explores the use of music therapy to promote expressions such as vocalizations smiles and movement.
Kathryn completed both BA and MA in Music Therapy at Montclair State University , New Jersey. She has recently returned to New Zealand to take up the position of Music Therapist at Homai National School for the Blind and Vision Impaired. Kathryn's specialization is in music therapy with young people who have multiple disabilities.
