BConstructive programme launched for secondary schools

BConstructive is an innovative hands-on programme aimed at Year 11 and 12 secondary school students. It has been launched by InfraTrain New Zealand and other members of the Built Environment Training Alliance, a group of allied industry training organisations (ITOs) in the building and construction industries.

BConstructive is a practical and multi-disciplinary qualification, providing students with a variety of relevant skills including: construction, communication, design, literacy and numeracy, machinery, and research and technology skills.

It is suitable for students who show a flair for technology, design, building and construction.

The programme will provide students with an overview of the construction industries and increase their awareness of the broad range of career options available.

Students successfully participating in the programme will receive a National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills.

John Wills, CEO of InfraTrain New Zealand said the programme was a positive step towards addressing the skills shortage in the infrastructure industries.

BConstructive is focused on a range of practical, real world skills that will give students an excellent head-start for a whole range of rewarding careers in our industry.

It will provide a springboard to further industry training and qualifications ranging from civil constriction through to surveying and civil engineering he said.

A pilot of the programme was successfully trialed in 10 high schools throughout the country in 2007, and it is anticipated 150-200 high schools will offer BConstructive in 2008.

BConstructives resource material is web-based, and free to registered providers.  It is available to technical teachers online at www.bconstructive.co.nz
